Avoiding Common Epoxy Table Mistakes: Bubbles, Leaks, Yellowing, and Soft Cures

Epoxy resin is an unforgiving medium. Unlike wood, where mistakes can often be sanded away, resin errors tend to be permanent — or at minimum, expensive and time-consuming to correct. The good news is that most common epoxy table failures are entirely preventable once you understand why they happen.

This guide covers the five most common epoxy table mistakes, what causes them, and exactly how to avoid them.

Mistake #1: Bubbles in the Pour

Bubbles are the most common complaint from first-time epoxy builders — and the most misunderstood. There are actually two distinct bubble problems, each with a different cause and solution.

Surface Bubbles (During the Pour)

Cause: CO₂ released from your breath, air introduced during mixing, or surface tension as the resin settles.

Prevention:

  • Mix slowly and deliberately. Aggressive stirring whips air into the resin. Use a slow, folding motion and scrape the sides and bottom of the bucket.
  • After pouring, pass a propane torch or heat gun 6–8 inches above the surface in slow sweeping passes. The heat reduces surface tension and pops bubbles within the first 10–15 minutes of the pour.
  • Don't breathe directly over the pour — exhaled CO₂ causes surface pitting.

Fix if it happens: If bubbles appear after the resin has started to gel, you've missed the window. Sand the surface flat once fully cured and apply a fresh flood coat.

Deep Bubbles (From the Wood)

Cause: Air trapped in the wood grain escapes into the liquid resin as it warms during cure. This is especially common with porous species like oak and with live edges that have bark inclusions or voids.

Prevention: Always apply a seal coat before your main pour. Brush a thin layer of the same epoxy over all wood surfaces and let it cure to a firm, tacky state before pouring. This locks the air in place before the main pour contacts the wood.

Fix if it happens: Deep bubbles that cure into the resin are extremely difficult to remove without grinding back to the wood surface and starting over. Prevention is the only real solution.

Mistake #2: Form Leaks

A leaking form is a nightmare — liquid resin is thin, moves fast, and bonds permanently to almost any surface it contacts.

Cause: Gaps at seam joints, inadequate sealing, or forms that aren't level (resin pools to one side and finds a low point to escape).

Prevention:

  • Seal every interior seam with silicone caulk or hot glue before pouring. Run a bead along every corner and joint, then smooth it with a gloved finger.
  • Apply tuck tape or packing tape to all interior melamine surfaces. This prevents adhesion and makes demolding easier.
  • Level the form with a spirit level before pouring. Check in multiple directions. Even a slight tilt will cause uneven resin depth and increase leak risk at the low end.
  • Do a water test before committing to a resin pour. Fill the form with water and check for leaks. Let it sit for 30 minutes. Fix any drips before proceeding.

Fix if it happens: If you catch a leak early, plug it immediately with hot glue or tape from the outside. If resin has already escaped onto your workbench or floor, remove it while still liquid with isopropyl alcohol. Cured resin requires grinding or scraping.

Mistake #3: UV Yellowing

Nothing undermines a beautiful river table faster than a yellow tint developing in what was once crystal-clear or ocean-blue resin.

Cause: Most standard epoxy resins are not UV-stable. Ultraviolet light — from sunlight or even strong indoor lighting — breaks down the chemical bonds in the resin over time, causing an amber or yellow discoloration. This is a material property issue, not a technique issue.

Prevention:

  • Use UV-stable casting resin. Not all resins are created equal. Look for products specifically marketed as UV-resistant or UV-stable. These contain UV absorbers and light stabilizers that significantly slow yellowing.
  • Avoid direct sunlight. Even UV-stable resins will yellow eventually under sustained direct sun exposure. Position river tables away from south-facing windows or use UV-filtering window film.
  • Apply a UV-protective topcoat. Some builders add a final flood coat of UV-stable coating over the cured pour for an additional layer of protection.

Fix if it happens: Yellowing cannot be reversed chemically. The only fix is to sand or grind back the yellowed layer and apply fresh UV-stable resin — a significant undertaking on a finished table.

Mistake #4: Soft or Tacky Cure

A properly cured epoxy surface should be rock-hard. If yours is soft, rubbery, or sticky after the recommended cure time, something went wrong in the mix.

Off-Ratio Mixing

Cause: The most common culprit. Epoxy is a two-part system — resin and hardener must be combined in a precise ratio (typically 2:1 or 3:1 by volume or weight, depending on the product). Too much or too little hardener results in an incomplete chemical reaction and a permanently soft cure.

Prevention:

  • Always measure by weight using a digital scale, not by volume. Volume measurement is less accurate and more prone to error.
  • Use separate mixing containers for Part A and Part B before combining — never pour directly from one container to the other.
  • Mix thoroughly for the full recommended time (typically 3–5 minutes), scraping the sides and bottom of the bucket. Unmixed resin at the edges will remain soft.

Temperature Issues

Cause: Epoxy cures through an exothermic chemical reaction that is highly temperature-dependent. Below 65°F, the reaction slows dramatically and may not complete. Above 90°F, it accelerates — which can cause its own problems (see Mistake #5).

Prevention:

  • Work in a temperature-controlled space between 70–80°F.
  • Warm your resin components to room temperature before mixing if they've been stored in a cold environment. Cold resin is thicker, harder to mix, and more prone to incomplete cure.
  • Don't pour in a cold garage in winter without supplemental heat.

Fix if it happens: A soft cure from off-ratio mixing cannot be fixed by adding more hardener or waiting longer. The affected resin must be removed and the surface re-poured. If the soft layer is thin, aggressive sanding may remove it — but test a small area first.

Mistake #5: Exotherm Cracking

This one surprises builders who don't expect resin to generate heat — but the curing reaction is exothermic, and in large masses, that heat can become destructive.

Cause: Pouring too deep in a single pour. As the resin mass increases, the heat generated by the reaction has nowhere to dissipate. Temperatures inside a thick pour can exceed 400°F, causing the resin to crack, warp, smoke, or in extreme cases, catch fire.

Prevention:

  • Never exceed your resin's maximum single-pour depth. This is listed in the technical data sheet. For most deep-pour casting resins, it's 1–2 inches per layer.
  • Pour in stages. Allow each layer to reach a firm gel before adding the next. This dissipates heat between pours.
  • Use deep-pour casting resin, not table-top epoxy. Table-top epoxy is formulated for thin coats (1/8 inch or less). Using it in thick pours is a common and dangerous mistake.
  • Monitor the pour temperature. If you notice the resin getting very warm to the touch within the first hour, it's generating excessive heat. Move it to a well-ventilated area and do not leave it unattended.

Fix if it happens: Cracked or warped resin from exotherm must be cut out and re-poured in properly staged layers. There is no patch fix.
